1.4 Case Study - ICT and pensioners in rural England

Do you feel digital technolgies have made a genuine impact on the couple's lives?
I do believe that digital technologies have made a genuine impact on the couple's lives as they have been able to do so much more with their lives and their lives have been made so much easier. The 10 week course was a bonus but even without that the couple could have searched the internet to find out how to use the different types of programmes. They have been able to easily book holidays ands oon are going to be able to do their shopping online therefore, the impact of digital technologies have been good.

Would their lives be poorer if they did not have access to ICT at home?
Having ICT does not determine how poor someone is as some people may not want ICT in their lives as they prefer the older way of living. Therefore, the couples lives wouldn't have been poorer, they just wouldn't have benefitted from things such as writing up letters and going on holiday.

The couple were able to buy their own computer. Would access in the community centre 3 miles away be as useful?
I do not believe the computer at the community centre would be as useful because the couple would have had to travel 3 miles to use the computer which may not even have a printer or scanner. It makes much more sense to buy a computer as the money that will have been spent on it will savw unneccisary travel and petrol money to got to the community centre.
